Equitable Cities

Innovations for Informal Settlements

Approximately 65 million people, or 22 per cent, of India’s total population live in urban slums according to the country’s 2011 census. These neighborhoods present the greatest challenges to sustainable human development including issues of equity, safety, environmental quality, and resilience, all of which are central to the New Urban Agenda. Cities cannot fulfill their role of being centers of growth and vibrancy without conceiving and executing strategies to upgrade informal settlements. This panel will deliberate upon the approaches that can be adopted in terms of designing programs, encouraging, and adopting innovations effectively, whilst involving the disadvantaged populations living in informal settlements to participate in the processes that transform their own neighborhoods and cities.
